Jay Mathews, a long-time writer and expert on education in the United
States, rated the nation's top 100 high schools
for the March 23, 1998 issue of Newsweek magazine. Mathews used the number of Advanced
Placement tests taken at a high school in 1996, divided by the size of the
senior class. Advanced Placement courses, typically the most difficult that
high schools offer, allow students to become eligible for college credit if they
do well on the final tests. Park City ranked 92 out of tens of thousands of schools that were ranked.
